About Drehgriffel [dreː][gríffel] The name is a tribute to the culture of writing. It combines the word Dreh (twist), a reference to the twist mechanism, and the term Griffel (pen), a name for the oldest writing instrument in the world (from the Greek grapheĩon = writing instrument). The font is derived from the Sütterlin script. The original script was developed by the Berlin graphic artist and educator Ludwig Sütterlin for learning cursive writing, which became the widespread standard in Germany during the 1920s and replaced the former Kurrent script. Sütterlin script was banned in 1941. Today, only a few people still master this special cursive writing style.
